How to change the engine oil of your car?

Changing your car oil is not something that requires more of your skills since everyone interested can learn and do it at home. Although this is a simple process, you will find that most guys don’t know how to do it, and some are not interested just because getting involved in the process seems to be dirty and ugly.

Changing oil for yourself is essential since it is economical because you can choose the type and the quality of the oil your car can use and avoid buying overpriced products.

How to change the oil?

The following are the required steps you should follow when changing the oil in your vehicle. They are simple steps that need more concentration to avoid frequent leakages and failures in replacing the engine oil with the appropriate one.

·   Find the drain plug.

The drain plug is a nut located at the bottom of the engine under the oil pan. This nut cant is easily reached unless you jack up the car or crawl under to find it. Place the container for drainage of the old oil under the drain plug before opening it.

·    unscrew the drain plug.

Get the unscrewing spanner and loosen the drain plug. When the screw is loose enough, get a rag or a towel to protect your hand as you unscrew it slowly, after which the oil will drain out of your engine to the container.

·   Replacing the oil filter.

Using your hand or a wrench, unscrew the oil filter. Empty the oil from the filter to the container and set the used filter aside for recycling alongside used oil.

Moisten the gasket on the new filter by using the new oil and screw in the new filter to the engine following the instructions given indicated on the filter manual.

· Reinstall drain plug.

Wipe around the place after all the old oil has drained out before you screw in another new oil drain plug. Note that some drain plugs are reinstalled with gasket, so you must make sure you install a gasket before you screw in.

· Pour in fresh oil.

Pour the fresh oil slowly into the oil filler hole using a funnel. Replace the oil filler cap and allow the engine to run for about 30 to 60 seconds then check if there are any leaks from the drain plug. Turn off the engine and check the oil level once more by using a dipstick. Keep adding the oil until it indicates that it is full.

·   Final testing.

Remove the draining container and go round to give a test drive. Then let the oil settle for 10 minutes and check for the last time using a dipstick.

How much can I save by changing the oil on my own?

Changing oil for your own is an easy and economical process. One can save up to $15 by changing oil himself/herself rather than taking the vehicle to the service centre. Crude oil products

What are the different products that come from crude oil?

All petroleum product is derived from crude oil. Petroleum products are crude oil complex mixtures, contrary to petrochemicals which are made of chemical compound collections. The crude oil is converted into several classes of fuel among other petroleum products.

Following the different stages in an oil refinery, the most produced petroleum products depend on the market demand. The commonly produced better portions are energy carriers. These involve various classes of fuel oil and gasoline. The fuel is then categorized into volatile and less volatile fuel. The volatile fuel classes are used as jet fuel, petrol for vehicles, diesel, heating oils, among other categories. While less volatile or heavy fuel is used as lubricating oils, paraffin wax, tar among other heavy oils.

The continuous oil refinery then transforms other oil products into useful materials such as plastics products. Petroleum products are also used to manufacture heating gases among other gas products.

The list of the commonly known crude oil products are;

  • Liquid fuel such as diesel, kerosene, petrol, turbine fuel among others.
  • Lubricants such as oils, greases, alongside other lubricants.
  • Bulk tar used in roofing and sealing holes.
  • paraffin wax used to package frozen food.
  • Sulphur which contains organosulphur compounds.
  • Slack wax that is used to manufacture candles among other products.
  • Petroleum coke used in the manufacture of electrodes among other solid fuels.
  • Petrochemicals used in chemical industries as polymers among other pharmaceutical products.
  • Gaseous fuel such as propane.

What oil is the best for my car?

Generally speaking, this question lacks its specific answer. This is because a car is designed to use a particular brand of oil as a lubricant, depending on its make and functionality. The oil is categorized based on its weight, to suit the engine mode of operation based on different seasons. The recommended oil based on the quality is determined by testing, recommendation and certification by the American Petroleum Institute, and the starburst symbol indicates that the oil has been verified.

How much oil do I put in my car?

The amount of oil to be put in a car depends on engine capacity. Different vehicles ranging from small cars to big truck have various engine capacities and requires a different volume of engine oils. Putting engine oil to your car also requires you to fill the standard capacity. Putting extra oil can overfill and can damage other parts where oil is not required. While putting less oil may lead to under lubrication and hence engine overheating. This may cause severe problems for your car engine.

Finding how much engine your car needs, you need to read through your car users manual for your car system specifications. Visit the manufacturer’s site or find any other online useful resource that talks about this matter.

What is engine oil usually made of?

Motor oils are mostly made of thicker or heavier petroleum hydrocarbons extracted from crude oil, together with additives that give specific properties. The composition of a regular motor oil consists of between 18-34 carbon atoms per molecule.

The motor oil is an essential component in a vehicle moving parts since it creates a thin film between its viscosity. The viscosity between the metal surface and the film should be high enough to maintain the lubricating film. It should be low enough on its molecules so that it can maintain constant flow around the movable engine parts.

Oil is also made of hydrocarbons that can easily ignite and burn. The lowest the oil flashpoint is, the most dangerous it is. Still, the refinery companies separate the oil from the volatile compounds that give it a low flash point, hence reducing its tendency to burn and thus making it a cooling agent too.

how do we compare different types of oils and fluids in the car?

The best way to keep your car in the desired tune-up is to check fluids, add or change on your own. The key things you need to know is the different types of oil used in different units in your vehicle. This is a simple and inexpensive way of keeping the health of your engine alongside other essential parts such as braking system, steering, clutch, radiator, gearbox, among other components.

Here are a different kind of oil in-car system;

  • Engine Oil: this is the primary lubricant for movable engine parts.
  • brake fluid: this is the kind of liquid that pressurizes and provide power to your braking system.
  • Transmission fluids: These kinds of fluid keeps your transmission lubricated and prevent most of the transmission problems.
  • power steering fluids: this is a kind of fluid that adds power to your steering as it controls the wheels and also acts as a lubricant to steering system movable parts.
